Strength training for muscle development has changed little in over 50 years. Why? Because the same principles still apply! While free weights are great for working the big muscle groups, machines allow you to really shape the muscle group by providing tension at different extensions - something you can't always achieve with free weights. Lets compare dumbbell flyes to cable flyes for example; with the dumbbells the tension diminishes as you near the top of the movement. With cable flyes however the tension is maintained throughout the range of motion, so the muscles have to work harder as a result.
